If anyone cares:
"Set in early sixteenth century Italy, the novel appears to be concerned principally concerned with the politics and political negotiations of that time and in that part of the world, as seen through the rivalry between Niccolo Machievelli and Caesar Borgia."

Avon had some wonderful covers back in the old days. C. S. Lewis, A. Merritt, and others got the best of them.
