I'm Sure You'll All Agree

Uh, no. I don't agree. E.T. #1? Not in my world. Nor should Munich rank ahead of Schindler's List. And the Cruise movies are too high.

It's a good article, better than many/most ob the site, and I agree with most of the analysis, but like Jeff, I have some problems with it.

The Cruise films are too high.
War of the Worlds ranked ahead of Jurassic Park? Not in my world!
I don't understand how ET can be ranked #1. I've never liked it, indeed have not ever been able to sit all the way through it. To me it's a cutesy kid movie, that's all.

I could argue with some of the other rankings, but why bother.

Well, I see I am not alone. I hated, absolutely hated E.T. But A.I. was even worse. Personally, I'd put Schindler's List first and Raiders second, but, all in all, it's been one hell of a career, maybe one of the greatest for any director (so far) in the history of movies.

Perhaps in talking with film fans or from my own watching, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is one of the best and one true, enduring classic from Spielberg. Or from the creators - Lucas/Spielberg as they came up with the whole story and it was scripted by L. Kasdan.

The movies MUNICH and SCHINDLER'S are indeed much more deep, much more political (I have seen both) but I find that to be the sort of film I can't bring myself to watch again and again. Some people with Jewish heritage, too, appreciate the story but cannot even watch a Holocaust picture. Spielberg too said that the greatest thing he created in his career is SHOAH FOUNDATION to document stories and history by suvivors, and that it happened after he filmed the adaptation of the SCHINDLER'S novel!

E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial is really what many people seem to think is pure cinema - and highly likeable. But at a glance it seems like a family film, or a story about the boy and love for a sad, lost creature (the E.T.), and it makes some people question the popularity of the movie.

Though on later viewings, we see the story really is the kids, and the mom, and their dynamic and their discovery of the events of the creature they care about and want to have leave for home at any cost - and that's the real framework. The kids story is what is the real heart. Spielberg, in part, said it came from life, as in his home his mom and dad were divorced...

Raiders is the one I never get tired of. I also like E.T. I wanted to like Third encounters more than I did.
