And the Chronicles of Narnia is even older than LOTR.
The Once and Future King was published in 1958.
The Gormenghast books were published between 1949 and 1956.

Some of it leaves me cold, too, Fred. I read one Sanderson and wasn't charmed. Never read Jordan or Feist. On the other hand, I enjoyed Scott Lynch's books, and also THE NAME OF THE WIND. Haven't read Rothfuss' second book, however.
