Just as I was going to comment that clearly we don't have the same taste (Edward St. Aubyn doesn't do it for me) he started hitting some that I do like - A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, for one. Also Updike's Rabbit books. USA by Dos Passos. The Barrytown Trilogy by Roddy Doyle.

I know Rick Robinson loves it but I've never been able to get into Durrell's Alexandria Quartet.

I'd rather read both of your books than 90% of this list, I must say.

There are so many great series detectives/law enforcement officers and Phillip Marlowe was the only one they could suggest? Not that Marlowe doesn't deserve to be there, but there are so many others--for my money you could trade out those Ender's Game books for a start!

I really enjoyed Doyle's novels.
